Why You Should Choose an Assisted Living Community with a Pharmacy Partnership

For millions of Americans, medications are a part of daily life. They are a lifeline, saving them from the long-term complications from diseases like: high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

As you age, you may find that you or someone you love is taking more and more of these medications—so many that it may be hard to keep up! That’s where assisted living can help you. We’ll explain how, and why it’s important to choose a community with a pharmacy partnership.

Why Do Older Adults Need More Medications?

Did you know that 90 percent of older adults take at least one prescription medication, while 80 percent take at least two? In addition, 36 percent regularly take five different prescription medications.

Older Americans take more medications because they are more likely to have several chronic diseases at the same time. Many of these diseases, such as arthritis, typically surface with age.

Assisted living communities are perfect for those who take several medications because we’re able to provide assistance and help managing prescriptions.

That means no headaches or inconvenience from driving to the pharmacy and waiting in line to get a refill!

When considering an assisted living facility near you, there’s one question that you should ask:

Does it have a pharmacy partnership?

This arrangement can make all the difference in the world, and it paves the way for a higher quality of care. At Coastal Pointe, we’re proud to say that we have a partnership with a long-term care pharmacy and a local one.

We’ll tell you all about it.

Assisted Living Communities with Pharmacy Partnerships

We have a close relationship with Southern Pharmacy, a long-term care pharmacy. One of the advantages is that they deliver our medications nightly, with everything neatly blister packed.
But the partnership is about more than mere convenience. It’s about providing the best care for our residents. We know that you’ve placed your trust in us, and we will honor that.

How?

In addition to delivering the medications, the pharmacy sends a nurse who will provide our staff with continuing education training. This involves providing extensive information on several subjects including:

  • Infection control and prevention
  • CPR
  • Fall prevention
  • Additional training to work with those with dementia

This pharmacy does accept most insurances, but we do get a quote from them before resident admission to ensure that the family approves of the copays.

Additionally, each location has backup pharmacies to receive antibiotics or any medication that we need to immediately administer and cannot wait until delivery that night.
